On Edge by Andrea Petersen
*NO SPOILERS*
On Edge is
delightfully informative take on what it means to live with anxiety, and how to
overcome it. This book made me realize how many people live with some form of
day-to-day anxiety, whether it be big or small. Anxiety is more common than we
think, and this book was a good read because it was very informative on what it
is like to deal with it in every aspect of life. Petersen wrote about her
struggles in work, home, and other areas of life, that seem so easy and simple
to someone without a disorder like anxiety, but can be very hard for someone
like Andrea. She also writes about the changes in treatment and awareness from
the 80’s to now. I’m glad she wrote this book because it shows that even though
you think you aren’t in control, you can harness your affliction and turn it
into something positive. This book also shows that you can still be successful even
if you are dealing with something like anxiety. I think that anxiety is an “out
of sight, out of mind” disorder where most people choose to ignore it, or don’t
even know much about it. It is good to see books like these that educate people
on a certain type of illness and help people realize, “hey this is serious,
something needs to be done to help.” I think that is beautiful. Mental illness
cannot be generalized and people suffering from a mental illness are like
snowflakes; They might all look the same on the outside, but when you take a
closer look, they are all different in their own way. This book is great for
people interested in Psychology, because there is some good research and
experiment explanations to how some people have studied anxiety and how it works.
Sometimes this book can read like a medical textbook, but it has a lot of
useful information, and she uses analogies to help explain some of the big
medic words. It might be an information overload right at the beginning, but it’s
okay to take this book in small doses so you can really understand and appreciate what you’re
reading.
